It's widely accepted that friendships are invaluable to the soul but few of us were aware that they could also boost the bank account.
A study of 10,000 US students over a period of 35 years suggests the wealthiest people are those that had the most friends at school. Each extra schoolfriend added 2% to the salary.
The researchers said this was because the workplace is a social setting and those with the best social skills prosper in management and teamwork.
If a wide circle of friends is taken as a popularity indicator, does that mean the more you have the more successful and happy you are? Or can you have too many? What is the best number?
The average number is about 150, says leading anthropologist Robin Dunbar.
It may sound like a lot, but think of your Christmas card list - 50 cards to 50 couples = 100 friends.
"It's the number of people that you know as persons and you know how they fit into your social world and they know how you fit into theirs. They are a group of people to which you have an obligation of friendship."
They usually consist of an inner circle of five "core" people and an additional layer of 10, he says. That makes 15 people - some will probably be family members - who are your central group and then outside that, there's another 35 in the next circle and another 100 on the outside. And that's one person's social world.
Friendships help us develop as people, says Mark Vernon, author of The Philosophy of Friendship, but the very term "friend" covers a whole range of relationships. You have a very close friendship with your partner but with others it may just be a common interest or history or simply children the same age.
"Aristotle said friends must have eaten salt together and what he meant is there's a sense that people have lived a significant part of their life together. They've sat down and shared meals and the ups and downs of life.
"You really have to have mulled over things with them to become really good friends and there's only so many people you can do that with.
"You can have friends because of what you do together or enjoy something together like football or shopping, but they're not as profound friends as those who you love for themselves because of something in their character. And it doesn't matter what you're doing with them, even sitting alone in a room."
'One in, one out'
There's a limit to how many close friends like this you can have and it's probably between six and 12, he says.
"I think this idea that you can have virtually limitless numbers of friends does water down the concept of friendship. I think it's one of those things where less is more."
Not if you're a socialite like designer Nicky Haslam, who recently threw a party for 800 friends. But even people who don't inhabit the heady world of fashion and celebrity have too many friends to manage.
A newspaper columnist once told of her shock when, having struck up a rapport with a man over dinner, she was told at the end of the meal he had no vacancies for friends. He was operating a "one-in, one-out" policy. Six months later she received a card stating he was now available for friendship.
That's an extreme example but many people view their friendships scientifically and regulate them accordingly.
Julie, a 34-year-old PR consultant in London, says she has three categories of friends. Firstly there are nine close friends - the Premier League - whom she could ring any time of day or night and they would drop everything and come if necessary.
"I try to see them every few weeks and speak at least once a fortnight. I have a rota in my head and try and ring one of them each night as I drive home from work. It shows how pressured we are for time that speaking to friends is multi-tasking."
Julie's next social group has about 20 people, mostly men, whom she would see every couple of months, then there are more than 100 people beyond that on the outer fringes - friends from work, friends from her last job and friends from travelling.
"There are two people whom I don't really want to stay friends with but I don't have the heart to say no to. People I used to work with, they invite you to dinner and then you feel you have to invite them back, but you really don't have the time and it gets really stressful, especially since getting a boyfriend.
"I want to spend two nights a week with him, two nights to myself at home and two nights at the gym, so that leaves one night to see people."
There is a perception that as society has become more mobile, and traditional family bonds have loosened, friendships have become more fleeting. But on the other hand, modern technology has meant we can stay in touch with more people than ever.
"First email, then mobile, and now social networking sites like Facebook have made it much easier for people to grow their circle of friends beyond their immediate inner circle," says digital media expert Dan Clays of BLM Quantum.
"But the swelling is predominantly in the outer-reaches of their circle, and often the fringe group. If you were to examine the profile of someone's group of friends on Facebook, the probability is that a large contingent were accepted as friends out of curiosity and after an initial exchange, the level of dialogue slows down to a trickle."
This is especially apparent in the 16-24 audience group, the digital generation, he says, so it will be interesting to see if they are able to maintain that contact later in life.
But maybe we're too fixated on numbers, says Mr Vernon.
"Ask yourself about the quality of your friendships, not about the quantity."

PSR Engineering College Plays a Role in a Film
PSR Engineering College, where I studied, which is (more -'ly/less +'ly) known for its strict rules in-respective of controlling all aspects of a student life during on and off the college campus has let its own campus to be used for filming. Not surprising?? Then probably you was/are not student of PSR then. Anyone who studied in PSR, which is known for its philosophy(?!) of all kind of anti-entertainment would definitely be surprised at this details. And the filming is not kind of some documentary or showcasing the talents blah.. blah... the filming is for pure commercial entertainment film.
Anyhow, its my college and surprised/happy to see the class rooms I used and varendah's I ran(?@! - OK I'm hearing the mumbles... When the hell this gaint ran???? I never ran.. just walked bit fast) has been filmed.
I have got few stills from the Tamil film 'Poo'. It's story is about tender age love twined around villages like Sivakasi and cities like Kovilpatti, Chennai etc..
One of a funny fact in this film is, the hero 'Srikanth' was told studying in a Chennai based college but they filmed at my college which is in the same area where the film has been shot - Sivakasi.
There are few points you should really look at it,
Reason to fine Srikanth, his Father, Director ...
Reason for banning mobile phone
Srikanth realizing he is not in Chennai based college

Poo lead actress makes call to our hero who was studying in Chennai based college...
Not sure whether its because of problem in the mobile connection routing or director's intended plan... the call has reached our hero who was just studying in my college in the same area... a clip with the view of Abdul Kalam MCA Block behind...
Our hero picks up the call..
Discusses with his Girl Friend about the call.. Hey wait a second... Something is striking me hard here... Is our hero - student of PSR Engineering College - talking to a opposite sex member(or better say alien) right in front of the administrative block????? Can't believe it... PSR has done whatever it can to stop such conversions and here its happening under full public galore???? PSR management should take strong exception to this case and bring those perpetrators of this evil act to justice(sounds like FM Pranab sab's wording after the Mumbai blast? Yes its same.. because both the events - terrorist strike & girl/boy discussion in PSR - have same level of serious implication as far as PSR Management is considered).
PSR management should summon Srikanth, his father, his wife(?@ her too? yes she too, because fine has to paid by all stakeholders and PSR coffers has to be filled up), the girl friend, her father, director, and script writer to college. Contain all of them in the usual designated hostel room, conduct inquiry with all the anti-conversation officials interrogating them all through night irrespective of what evidence presented. Lofty fines should be imposed and after paying the fines suspend them for a month. (oh cant suspend them na... they are crash course students right... So wat.. collect the fines atleast)
Another view with MCA Block behind...
Hey another thing striking me... Is he using mobile inside college campus??? PSR has policy of no first use of mobile('no first use' - sounds like India's 'no first nuclear weapon use' policy? Yes right as far as PSR management is concerned mobile phone emits radiations signals which the nuclear bombs also does when its ignited, so both are radio-active in nature and this kind of clever relationship analysis helped them decide in banning mobile). They should summon again all of them and fine them now ultra-heavily.... PSR management should really give me now outstanding student award for giving such useful tip-offs.
Our hero tries his best tricks to connect to the call...
Still trying to speak????
Finally he realized, he is not studying in the city based college but in a remote college where getting the mobile signal is like applying RTI application to get our unbiased Judge's income tax statement. You never get either of them.

Going to Write Exams
Old times of shivering for exams and preparing for it is back for me. My MS exams are scheduled tomorrow and I'm eagerly(?!@?!) waiting to try my hands on exams after some 4 years gap. I'm meeting my enemy tomorrow at Guru Nanak College both morning and evening.
Though exam is an enemy for me, I like to have fight with this enemy very often because so far in all the fights(right from class KG to Eighth Semester of my engineering) I have won all the rounds with good margins(lately).
This exams marks the beginning of official journey of two years to reach the destination M.S. I'm hoping to utilize this not just for sake of letters behind name but intelligence behind brain. God help me.. Oops.. Did I wrote God help me?? Myself is god. Is that not what I said in About Me section? Okay here is the real power... Mom please help me!!!

Journey of My Pet Tiger's Younger Brother & Family
My Tiger has been insisting me for long time that I should be writing a blog entry dedicated about its family. Obviously it will have that interests since it knows how many blog entries I have made about my family. Many may wonder how my Tiger made its interests known to me?!! Its a result of big research, I will tell you how... Tiger used to make sound like 'goof goof'(day time) or 'ooool.... ooool....'(night time) but for quite some days it has been making sound similar to this 'goof-ooool.... goof-ooool'... A combination of day-time and night-time noises... I was thinking what this could mean since its not been recorded in any history that dogs would make such noise. So I went down on research to decode it....
I wrote down the words 'goof-oool' many time fastly and continuosly.. say about nearly 4 hours... And by mistake at one instance I wrote 'goog-ooool'... You got it right know?? Yes I made a mistake in the word... But do you think I would over look the mistake and continue writing the word?? No... Never... Great Minds never leave the mistakes lightly and historic examples are Einstein reportedly made some 100's of mistakes before coming to the crap E=MC2 formula, and the Great Thomas Edison invented Lights after reportedly making some 1000 mistakes but he made use of mistakes and made new things out of it... Likewise why I'm telling all this is, the mistake I made while writing the word has some clues burried deep into it. Now come back to the word 'goog-ooool'... Does this sounds very unfamiliar?? No not all.. It strikes at the deep of your complex brain that something similiar has been heard by nearly all of the netizens... How?? Wondering??? Now just rework on the word 'goog-ooool'... remove some o's and you will get 'googl'... now have you got what my pet, Tiger is trying to say??? Still haven't got it??? Oops. My Tiger is genius compared to all who cant find the word yet... Its actually saying the word 'Google' my dear friends... Yes its talking(?!@?!) about the leading search gaint 'Google'... Now the job is half done still half is pending, we need to know why its talking about 'Google'.... Then comes this startling fact in my mind that my cute pet Tiger wants to make know this world about him, his family and culture by asking me write a blog entry and by that make Google crawl it and let the world study about it. And who knows one day their separated brother/sisters may host a reunion party by searching thier links/photos through 'Google'.... Oops see how talented my Tiger is.... I'm spell bound by talented sound 'goof-oool'....
I guess still few clever mind wondering, how I was able to give the 'let Google know' meaning??? Here comes the science... Its what people call 'Basic Instinct'... After all its my pet cared by me and I have strong interests in making people know about me by writing different blog entries and incidently this character has been passed implicitly to my pet Tiger -I strongly feel. Right?? Got all the missing clues??? You should have. Otherwise I suggest you to read again from the start.
Now for those who have got all this scientific experiments into this brain can go on and look at the pictures of my pet Tiger's family.

Recent Delhi Visit
Recently I visited Delhi to finish-off some unfinished work(definitely not planting the bombs but some techie work) and as-usual experienced lots of unforgettable experiences like sleeping in the airport for more than 6 hours due to a problem in my mobile, meeting famous(?#!) actor Govinda at Delhi airport terminal, and off-course from the talks I had with different people all through the day. Sharing few pics I clicked along all this,

Chennai Airport Passenger Loading Outer Terminal

While flying-in I went with IndiGo and this is one their flights(Airbus A320) interior.

Though actor Govinda is not visible but you can get who could be standing in other part of the picture from the way people look there.... After all India is a big celebrity freak nation.

Aahh here comes our hero Govinda... Sorry not able to get him in front of my camera... I should be RGV to get him I guess...

For novices... Flight ready to be boarded...
